Our Roots: A Glimpse into History
M. Dasapura is a remote village located at the far end of Hassan District in Karnataka, Southern India. The nearest town is Channarayapatna, approximately 16 kilometers away. Dasapura falls under the Diocese of Chikmagalur and holds a unique history dating back over a century.
In the early 1890s, during a journey to Sira, a Catholic priest happened to sit beside a Hindu man named Mr. Dasappa. Their conversation deeply moved Mr. Dasappa, leading him to embrace the Catholic faith. Inspired by his conviction, the entire village soon converted to Catholicism. A church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption was built in 1902. The people of Dasapura, primarily farmers, also rear cows and sheep.
Education Apostolate
In 1985, Nirmala Primary School was established by the parish to provide local-medium education to village children. It was later upgraded to a Higher Primary School.
The Sisters of the Institute of Franciscan Servants of Mary initially managed the school, residing at Nirmala Convent. After a brief period, they left, and in 1995, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes were invited to take over the mission.
The Sisters officially took charge of the school on June 1, 1995, with Sr. Anthoniamma as the first Headmistress. Starting with just 50 students, the school has grown steadily. It is committed to providing quality education, moral formation, and holistic development—values deeply appreciated by parents and well-wishers.
Recognizing the need for English-medium education, classes 6 and 7 were introduced in 2017. A dedicated three-classroom building with a hall was constructed during 2016–2017 and inaugurated on June 16, 2017. This initiative aims to empower students with broader educational opportunities.
A Landmark Moment: The Arrival of St. Joseph’s Sisters
May 27, 1995, marks a red-letter day for Dasapura. Responding to God’s call, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes arrived to serve the community. The pioneers—Sr. Marie Columba D’Souza, Sr. Anthoniamma, and Sr. Matilda Lobo—were warmly welcomed by Fr. Patrick Johannes, village elders, and youth.
The convent was then renamed St. Joseph’s Convent.
Living Our Mission
Rooted in the love of Jesus, we are called to live for God alone and to be for others, building communion through our lives and apostolic works.
Pastoral Mission
Pastoral work is at the heart of our mission. The sisters care for the Church linen, prepare for Mass, and are actively involved in Church maintenance. Regular house visits, prayers with the sick, and community outreach are integral to staying connected with the people.
St. Joseph’s Convent Boarding
To support children from distant villages, a boarding facility was established. It was blessed on July 6, 1997. The sisters lovingly care for the children, instilling discipline, hygiene, and strong moral values. The children receive academic support, nutritious food, medical care, and a nurturing environment—truly a “Home Away from Home.”
