HISTORY OF THE SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH OF TARBES IN MADURAI DIOCESE

Providence, Springfield
Community Sisters - 2025

The life of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes in the Madurai diocese began in 1969 at the trust-run Chesire home. People with mental and physical disabilities were served by this home. Our sisters provided them with loving care for forty years. Through the help of numerous donations, the sisters worked to enhance their living conditions by erecting infrastructure and other necessities to make their lives more pleasant. .

There have been issues with the sisters and administration since 2000. The provincial administration made the decision to buy our own land after realizing this. We were able to buy a piece of land and register it on March 28 2008 after 40 years of living in Madurai and a year-long search. The provincial was Sr. Maria Goretti Martis. Thirumangalam was the location of the purchased land. The sisters had to leave the Chashire Home because of the Authorities pressure and the affectionate care they provided for the underprivileged members of society.

On November 11, 2008, sisters Anita Ernimos, Bertha, and Leema Arockiamary, along with counselor Sr. Jeyarani and the assistance of Palotine fathers and brothers, moved to the rented house. The sisters resolved old accounts, transferred all records to the management, and departed from Chesire home with a heavy heart

The sister established the CBR [Community Based Rehabilitation] program for the disabled in 30 communities while residing in the rented home. Puthiya Desai New Direction was the name of this show. On World Disability Day, December 3, 2008, the sisters launched the program. To get the program going, we had three field staff members.

On July 8, 2009, the new community building’s foundation was laid. We were blessed with a new community building on April 7, 2010. The house was blessed and the Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Arch-Bishop Peter Fernando. Life in the new community Sr. Anita Eranimos, Sr. Magdaline, Sr.Josephine Jeyarani, Sr. Lourdu Mary, Sr. Alex Rani, and Sr. Kala began on May 1st with a community Mass.

The special school building was blessed and opened on May 26. In order to receive a government funding, DDRO Mr. Kanagaraj suggested establishing a special school rather than a daycare center.
